Driver's Delight - Angeles Crest Highway    NOW RE-SCHEDULED FOR OCT 24, 2020

Beloved by cyclists and sports car drivers, the Angeles Crest Highway in the San Gabriel Mountains is one of GPX's favorite playgrounds.  On Oct. 24, 2020 GPX will use the route listed in the book of PORSCHE'S GREATEST DRIVES for a day of driving the "Twisties".

NOTE: this is our first tour back, participation may be limited by the number of volunteers that are available for  check in, lead and sweep cars. Please volunteer.

The "Twisties"

We will start in La Canada, on the top deck of the parking structure behind Panera Bread,  990 Town Center Dr a, La Cañada Flintridge, CA 91011 near the intersection of Angeles Crest Highway and the 210 Freeway.  See map and directions to follow.

We will meet at 8:00 AM and depart promptly at 9:00 AM. This event will be run under the PCA Guidelines. This way people and cars can more easily maintain physical distancing.

Starting up Angeles Crest Highway, the speed limit is 40 MPH until we reach Red Box Ranger Station.  After that the speed limit is 55 MPH, in most sections.  We will observe all speed limits, as they allow ample opportunity for spirited driving. To add extra fun the route will go down Angeles Forest Road and return to Angeles Crest via Upper Big Tujunga Canyon Road then past Newcomb's Ranch.

After Newcomb's Ranch, we will head East, with a rest stop at Islip Saddle for a "Pit Stop", and to take in the beautiful view.

The destination of the morning drive will be the mountain town of Wrightwood which sits astride the San Andreas Fault, where we stop for lunch at the Grizzly Cafe.

Due to the anticipated size of the event,  participants may be divided into groups with staggered starts.

Participants will be assigned to a group with specified check in and departure times. Even if you are not a lead or sweep car, all members should be familiar with the PCA Tour Guidelines https://www.pca.org/resource/event-guidelines-tour

For safety reasons, PCA encourages monitoring GMRS Radios set to Channel 7, Sub-channel 20 to alert all participants to road conditions. If you have one, please bring it.

Reference Communicable Diseases: Please follow the  PCA and GPX event guidelines. In need of volunteers to staff the Check-in for Event Waivers, etc. Answer the volunteer sign up question in the Registration section.

Also write down the Mobile numbers of the Lead and Sweep cars that will be given at the Participants'  Meeting before the start of the tour.

A donation can be made with part of the proceeds being given to the Childrens Dental Health Clinic.

The tour ends in Wrightwood but there are various options for your return trip:

This is a “Rain or Shine” event.
